In a bold move shaking up the NBA landscape, the Golden State Warriors have finalized a trade, sending forward Jonathan Kuminga and guard Buddy Hield to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for center Kristaps Porzingis. This significant deal was reported by ESPN's Shams Charania on Wednesday evening, February 4, 2026.
But that’s not all—the Warriors also made another strategic decision by trading center Trayce Jackson-Davis to the Toronto Raptors for a second-round pick in 2026, which will be coming from the Los Angeles Lakers.
Jonathan Kuminga's journey with the Warriors comes to a close after a challenging 4½ years. The young 23-year-old wing, who was picked seventh overall in the 2021 draft, displayed glimpses of his immense potential through his athletic skills. However, he struggled to find a consistent role within the team, particularly after the Warriors acquired star player Jimmy Butler last season, which further complicated his integration into the lineup. Kuminga’s time with the Warriors was marked by ups and downs, including falling out of head coach Steve Kerr's rotation multiple times.
Following a tumultuous summer filled with negotiations, Kuminga signed a two-year contract worth $24 million, including a team option for the upcoming season. Notably, this arrangement restricted his eligibility for trade until January 15.
The Warriors had been eyeing Porzingis for several months, viewing him as a critical addition to their roster. Meanwhile, the Hawks are excited about acquiring Kuminga, who has high potential, alongside sharpshooter Buddy Hield, known for his impressive 39.5% shooting from beyond the arc.
Kuminga started the current season strong, playing the first 12 games. However, when the Warriors hit a rough patch, he found himself benched and ultimately removed from the rotation altogether after 13 games. Although he regained some playing time following Butler's season-ending injury, Kuminga himself faced setbacks due to a knee injury.
On the other hand, Kristaps Porzingis began the season with great momentum, averaging 19.2 points through his first 13 games with the Hawks after being traded from the Boston Celtics in the offseason. Unfortunately, his season took a turn when an illness sidelined him for a significant portion of December. Last season, while with the Celtics, Porzingis was diagnosed with a disorder affecting his autonomic nervous system known as POTS, which severely impacted his performance during the playoffs.
Porzingis reported that his medical team identified effective management strategies over the summer, leading him to feel optimistic as he entered this season. After returning from his extended absence on December 31, he only played four additional games before facing yet another period of inactivity. As of January 7, he has not participated in any games.
When fit, Porzingis is considered one of the elite stretch-five players in the league, standing at an impressive 7-foot-2 and serving as a formidable rim protector. He currently is on an expiring contract worth $30.7 million and is poised to enter free agency this summer.
As for Kuminga, he boasts career averages of 12.5 points and 4.2 rebounds, with a shooting percentage of 50% from the field.
