Fraud Allegations Rock Southern Africa: A Tale of Socialites and Scams
A high-profile socialite's arrest in Botswana has sparked a cross-border scandal, leaving victims demanding justice.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) is in talks with Botswana authorities to extradite Evans Sivechere, a Zimbabwean socialite and entrepreneur known as Vecco Lupa, who is wanted for multiple fraud cases in South Africa. Sivechere's alleged crimes have left a trail of angry victims across the region.
But here's where it gets controversial: Sivechere, a migration consultant, was arrested in Gaborone, Botswana, for his involvement in an international job scam. He operated Diamond Migration, a company that promised job placements and work permits for various European countries. However, many clients claim they paid substantial fees only to discover they had been scammed.
After Sivechere's arrest, victims in South Africa came forward, alleging they too had been defrauded. They claim SAPS initially seemed reluctant to take action against the accused fraudster. But SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that multiple cases have been opened, with the suspect linked to at least three fraud cases in Midrand.
And this is the part most people miss: The scandal has also implicated several social media influencers and celebrities. Victims accuse Zimbabwean and South African socialites, including Madam Boss, Kiki and Tytie, the Nyathi family, Mama Vee, Vee Mampeezy, and Sphalaphala Saga Marothi, of colluding with Sivechere in the scam. These influencers had publicly endorsed Diamond Migration, giving it legitimacy in the eyes of their followers.
One victim, Yvonne, said, "I would never have paid such a large sum without seeing these celebrities promoting the agency." She and other victims feel the influencers should be held accountable for their role in the scam.
The influencers have responded in various ways, with Madam Boss apologizing and promising stricter vetting in the future. Others have quietly removed promotional content. However, victims argue that apologies are not enough, calling for legal action against the influencers.
As the Botswana investigation continues, victims in South Africa struggle to get their cases heard by the police. The scandal raises questions about the power of influencer endorsements and the responsibility of public figures in promoting services.
