Rumanite amber is found in Romania, specifically around the village of Colti. This amber is prized for its deep, reddish hues. The woman who found the nugget lived in Colti, and the amber remained a humble doorstop, even escaping the notice of jewel thieves who targeted her home. After her death in 1991, her relative, suspecting it might be valuable, sold it to the Romanian state. Experts at the Museum of History in Krakow, Poland, appraised the amber, estimating it to be between 38 and 70 million years old.
Daniel Costache, director of the Provincial Museum of Buzau, said that the discovery is of great significance both scientifically and at the museum level. Classified as a national treasure, the nugget has been housed at the Provincial Museum of Buzau since 2022.
So, what exactly is amber? It's essentially fossilized tree resin, formed over millions of years. This viscous substance hardens into a beautiful, warm-hued gemstone.
Over time, this resin can act as a natural trap, preserving insects and other small creatures. Though amber is relatively common in the Northern Hemisphere, it's been discovered less frequently in the Southern Hemisphere.
During the Barremian period, around 122 million years ago, coniferous trees produced vast amounts of resin worldwide.
In Ecuador, 112-million-year-old amber has been found, preserving an entire ancient ecosystem, including various insects and even a fragment of a spider web. This suggests the existence of a humid, resinous forest during the Cretaceous period.
In 2024, scientists discovered amber in West Antarctica for the first time, providing evidence of a mid-Cretaceous rainforest near the South Pole. This finding, along with fossils of roots, pollen, and spores, suggests that this prehistoric environment was dominated by conifers.
Marine geologist Johann Klages from the Alfred Wegener Institute in Germany stated that this discovery allows a journey to the past.
