A heated battle is underway in Mbeere North, with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) pulling out all the stops to secure victory in the upcoming parliamentary by-election. The party's candidate, Leonard Muriuki Muthende, has the full backing of UDA's top brass, including Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, who is leading the charge.
During a recent campaign rally in Ngunyumu and Kune, Kindiki emphasized the need for unity and development, urging residents to support Muthende as the best candidate to continue the progress initiated by former MP Geoffrey Ruku.
"We're not asking for blind support," Kindiki stated. "We want you to back Leonard because he embodies the values and vision we need to propel Mbeere North forward. He'll ensure roads are tarmacked, households are connected to electricity, water projects expand, and bursaries are managed efficiently."
But here's where it gets controversial... Kindiki took aim at Rigathi Gachagua, leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), accusing him of divisive tactics and personal attacks.
"Gachagua's focus on disparaging Embu leaders and creating divisions is a distraction from the real issues," Kindiki said. "Our people deserve better than this. Mbeere North voters are wise; they seek a candidate with a strong agenda, not one who stirs up trouble."
UDA chairperson and Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire echoed these sentiments, warning against electing an opposition MP.
"It would be foolish to willingly enter the opposition camp," she said. "The people of Mbeere North are too smart for that."
Muthende, for his part, has pledged to ensure fair distribution of bursaries and establish an education fund if elected. He also hit back at Gachagua's personal attacks, stating, "Gachagua's politics of hate have no place here."
CS Geoffrey Ruku supported Muthende, condemning Gachagua's remarks as taboo within the Mbeere community.
Other UDA leaders, including Embu Senator Alexander Mundigi and Tharaka Nithi Woman Representative Susan Mwindu, have rallied behind Muthende.
Muthende faces stiff competition from Newton Kariuki of the DP Party and Duncan Mbui of the CCK Party in the by-election on November 27.
The poll will be held simultaneously with other by-elections across the country, including the Baringo Senate by-election and parliamentary by-elections in Banissa, Kasipul, Magarini, Malava, and Ugunja.
So, who will emerge victorious in this highly contested race? Will Mbeere North voters prioritize development and unity, or will the opposition gain ground? The outcome will have significant implications for the region's future.
