In an exciting move, the Cincinnati Reds have secured first baseman Michael Toglia by signing him to a minor league contract. This announcement comes via his MLB transaction log. At 27 years old, Toglia recently became a free agent after being non-tendered by the Colorado Rockies in late November. Last season, he played across both Triple-A and Major League levels.
Initially, Toglia appeared to be a promising three-true-outcomes hitter following his 2024 performance. During that season, he showcased his power by hitting 25 home runs in just 116 games, coupled with a solid walk rate of 11.8%. Although these statistics were impressive, they were tempered by a high strikeout rate of 32.1%, which ultimately resulted in a league-average wRC+ of 98. However, his struggles intensified at the start of the past season, where he faced significant challenges at the plate, posting a staggering 39.1% strikeout rate in the first two months. This poor showing led to his demotion, and throughout the remainder of the season, he oscillated between the major league team and the Isotopes, their Triple-A affiliate.
Toglia was selected by the Rockies as the 23rd overall pick in the 2019 draft, and he consistently displayed formidable power throughout his minor league career, although it came with notable swing-and-miss issues. He made his major league debut with the Rockies in 2022, but his appearances were limited during that season and the following one, where he managed to hit six home runs over 76 games. His breakout year in 2024 was more reflective of his minor league potential, particularly regarding his ability to draw walks, as he had maintained a walk rate of at least 12% at every level before his promotion. Unfortunately, this rate dipped below 8% during his initial two stints in the big leagues.
When Toglia does make contact, he has the potential to produce significant offense. In 2024, he ranked impressively in the 98th percentile for barrel rate and the 94th percentile for hard-hit percentage. Yet, the challenge remains that he has not been able to consistently make contact. Throughout all four of his seasons in the majors, his whiff rate has exceeded 33%, and last year, he recorded the fourth-lowest contact rate among players with at least 300 plate appearances.
