Witness the historic moment as Paul Baffoe-Bonnie takes his oath of office as Ghana's 28th Chief Justice, marking a significant milestone in the nation's legal history. On November 17, 2028, President John Dramani Mahama presided over the solemn ceremony at Jubilee House, bestowing upon Baffoe-Bonnie the prestigious role of Chief Justice. This event was captured in a video shared by The Law Platform, showcasing the moment President Mahama administered the oath to Justice Baffoe-Bonnie. Following the ceremony, the President extended his congratulations to the newly appointed Chief Justice, followed by the presentation of the instrument of appointment, eliciting applause from the audience. Justice Baffoe-Bonnie then engaged in pleasantries with Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang before posing for the official photo as Chief Justice. The President and Vice President joined Baffoe-Bonnie for this historic moment. The journey to this appointment began on September 23, 2025, when the President nominated Baffoe-Bonnie for the position. He was vetted by the Appointments Committee on November 10, 2025, and his nomination was approved by Parliament on November 13, 2025, with a substantial majority of 164-69 after a heated debate. Prior to his nomination, Baffoe-Bonnie served as the Acting Chief Justice following the suspension of the former Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, as the most senior Supreme Court judge. Baffoe-Bonnie's legal career is illustrious, having been called to the Bar in Ghana in 1983. He began as a Circuit Court Judge in Kumasi and later served as a High Court Judge in Duayaw Nkwanta. His appointment to the Court of Appeal in 2006 and subsequent appointment as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana by President John Agyekum Kufuor in June 2008 further underscore his distinguished legal career. In 2013, he was part of the Supreme Court panel that heard the landmark election petition filed by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), seeking to annul approximately four million votes from the 2012 general elections due to alleged irregularities. The petition was ultimately dismissed by the court. This momentous occasion not only solidifies Baffoe-Bonnie's place in Ghana's legal history but also highlights the importance of the Chief Justice's role in upholding the nation's legal integrity.
