Unlike the core stage connections, which can be repaired at the launch pad, the umbilical lines leading to the upper stage are only accessible inside the vast Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
The mission team swiftly decided to roll the rocket back to the VAB for troubleshooting. This move proved effective, as engineers identified the helium flow issue within a week. Inspections revealed that a seal in the quick disconnect, responsible for helium flow from ground systems into the rocket, was obstructing the pathway. NASA's update detailed the team's actions: they removed the quick disconnect, reassembled the system, and validated the repairs by running a reduced flow rate of helium.
The team is now assessing why the seal became dislodged to prevent future occurrences. This meticulous process ensures the rocket's readiness for the Artemis II mission, showcasing NASA's commitment to safety and precision in space exploration.
