Hollywood Meets the Arab World: Miramax and Qatar Team Up for a Cinematic Revolution

On Friday, Miramax and the Film Committee at Media City Qatar announced a groundbreaking multi-project deal. Spearheaded by Miramax MENA+T’s regional headquarters in Doha, under the leadership of Lucy Dertavitian, Head of Content, this collaboration aims to co-develop films and series tailored for Middle Eastern and international audiences. The agreement includes the executive production of one original scripted series and one film, with projects already in various stages of development. Production timelines and release details are still under wraps, but anticipation is high.
This announcement came during the Film Committee’s inaugural Industry Days meeting, held alongside the new Doha Film Festival. Earlier, the Committee revealed partnerships with Neon and Department M, as well as a lucrative 50% cash rebate incentive for film and TV productions in Qatar. These moves underscore Qatar’s growing ambition to become a global hub for cinematic storytelling.
But here’s where it gets controversial: Miramax, co-owned by Qatar’s BeIN Media Group and Paramount Skydance (with the latter’s 49% stake originally acquired by ViacomCBS in 2019), is diving headfirst into culturally specific storytelling. At the Industry Days conference, Miramax CEO Jonathan Glickman hinted at the studio’s plans to leverage its library of 700 film titles for the joint development slate. One standout project? A remake of the 2001 romantic comedy Serendipity, starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale. “We’re excited to see what an Arabic-language, culturally adapted version of this story will bring,” Glickman said. But here’s the twist: he also teased a possible series reboot of Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, the 2002 spy film originally directed by George Clooney. The new script? Penned by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Tony McNamara (The Favourite, Poor Things).
And this is the part most people miss: Miramax isn’t just remaking films—it’s scouting local and regional talent, from mid-career writers to emerging voices from Doha’s universities. “These kids will have the expertise on the stories,” Glickman noted, “but we’ll bring our knowledge of how to get these stories to the world.”
Hassan Al Thawadi, head of the Film Committee, emphasized the partnership’s alignment with Qatar’s vision: “This deal showcases our commitment to developing world-class talent and authentic Arab stories right here in Doha.”
But Glickman didn’t stop there. He hinted at Miramax’s interest in African storytelling, revealing a major, yet-to-be-announced project. “Africa is underserved in terms of storytellers,” he said. “There’s incredible infrastructure in Nigeria and South Africa, and I’m keen to explore this huge growth area.”
