Across his storied career, Tyson earned a reputation as the most intimidating force in the ring, driven by blistering power and a rapid rise to fame. He even became the youngest heavyweight champion in history by knocking out Trevor Berbick in 1986, a milestone that fulfilled a seven-year vow he’d spoken to Muhammad Ali.
In Tyson’s early days, he trained with the legendary coach Johnny Tocco, who mentored many heavyweight contenders of that era. Tocco later articulated that Sonny Liston was the hardest-hitting boxer he ever worked with. Liston was widely regarded as a fearsome presence, with a stare that could unsettle opponents and a reputation as a formidable finisher—qualities, in Tocco’s view, that surpassed Tyson’s power.
Even with Tyson’s own perspective aligning with that sentiment at times, he acknowledged Liston’s intimidating aura, describing him as “the scariest fighter to ever live” during an appearance on The Big Podcast with Shaq. He emphasized that Liston stood apart as a near-mythic force inside the sport.
