The Dartford Tunnel, a vital transportation link, has been closed for emergency repairs, causing significant disruptions for commuters. The closure, which began around midday on Friday, January 24, is expected to continue throughout the day, leaving drivers facing delays and congestion.
The incident occurred when a lorry exceeding the permissible height entered the left tunnel, striking essential equipment and causing extensive damage. This equipment is crucial for the tunnel's safe operation, necessitating immediate repairs. National Highways has responded swiftly, deploying engineers, contractors, and safety teams to inspect, repair, and test the affected areas.
Initially, it was anticipated that the route would only be closed for the morning. However, an update before 8 am revealed that the repairs are more extensive than initially thought, and the tunnel will remain closed for the remainder of the day. Amy Breeze, duty manager at National Highways, assured commuters that they are working diligently to resolve the issue and reopen the tunnel as soon as it is safe.
The damage is widespread, affecting the ventilation fans, lighting, CCTV, and fire suppression system along the tunnel's entire length of 0.8 miles. This has led to severe disruptions, with drivers experiencing delays and congestion. Last night, there were delays of two hours, with eight miles of congestion, and a broken-down vehicle on the Dartford Crossing clockwise further exacerbating the situation.
In a separate incident, a collision occurred on the motorway anti-clockwise yesterday morning, between the Swanley Interchange and Darenth Interchange, adding to the congestion caused by the tunnel closure. While two lanes were temporarily shut, the incident has since cleared.
As the repairs continue, National Highways urges drivers to plan their journeys accordingly, allowing extra time or considering alternative routes. The safety of road users is paramount, and the tunnel will remain closed until it can be safely operated. For the latest travel and traffic updates, tune in to kmfm.
