Get ready, because this is huge! The dynamic writing duo behind the animated sensation KPop Demon Hunters is teaming up with none other than Tim Burton for a remake of the classic sci-fi flick, Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman! This news is shaking up the film world, and for good reason. Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan, the masterminds behind KPop Demon Hunters, are taking on this iconic project, which is set to be directed by Burton himself.
The pair, who have just landed a massive gig with Warner Bros. Pictures to pen the screenplay, are also working with producers Andrew Mittman and Tommy Harper, with LuckyChap also on board. Kai Dolbashian is executive producing, and Morgan Begg is overseeing the project for LuckyChap.
Released in 1958, the original Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman told the story of a wealthy heiress who, after a stay in a mental institution, transforms into a giant and seeks revenge on her cheating husband and his scheming girlfriend. Warner Bros. has been developing a remake since 2024, with Gillian Flynn, the writer of Gone Girl, previously attached.
“We’re obsessed with the idea of a fifty-foot woman wreaking havoc because a man did her dirty,” the duo stated to The Hollywood Reporter. “We have a feeling a lot of people will relate.”
But here's where it gets controversial... The film's core concept, a woman scorned seeking revenge, is a powerful statement.
The writers, Jimenez and McMechan, are riding high on the success of KPop Demon Hunters. The film, co-written when they were just 24 years old, was made by Sony Pictures Animation and became a global phenomenon after streaming on Netflix last summer. It smashed records to become Netflix’s most-watched film ever, topped music charts, and earned numerous accolades, including three Golden Globe nominations, 10 Annie Award nominations (including Best Writing), and five Grammy nominations. This past weekend, the film won Best Original Song and Best Animated Feature at the Critics’ Choice Awards. Time also named it their 2025 Breakthrough of the Year.
Their journey began at university, where Jimenez, a Mexican American who grew up in Orange County, and McMechan, from a small town near Yosemite National Park, bonded over their love of comedy and exploring the complexities of womanhood.
And this is the part most people miss... Their early success led to a Sundance Feature Lab opportunity, where they were discovered by screenwriter Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy). Perlman recommended them to KPop Demon Hunters co-writer and co-director Maggie Kang.
Currently, they're working on their original series A Really Bad Person, with Legendary producing, and a queer western feature. They've also developed projects like a Lord Farquaad feature for DreamWorks Animation and a Cheech & Chong biopic.
In the world of TV, they're writers and co-producers on Brothers, an upcoming show for Apple+ starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, and staff writers for the Ren & Stimpy reboot.
Jimenez and McMechan are represented by WME and Mosaic.
