A thrilling cyclo-cross spectacle unfolded at the World Championships in Hulst, where Lucinda Brand emerged victorious, claiming her second elite women's title. This achievement is all the more remarkable given the challenging circumstances she faced.
The Battle for Glory
Lucinda Brand, representing the Netherlands, showcased her determination and skill to secure the rainbow jersey. Despite fierce competition from Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado, who finished a close second, and Puck Pieterse, who completed the Dutch podium sweep, Brand's performance was exceptional.

Brand's success in Hulst was the culmination of an impressive season. With 19 wins from 24 starts, she dominated the cyclo-cross circuit. Her previous World Championship victory in 2021, when spectators were not allowed due to COVID-19 restrictions, made this win all the more special, as she could finally celebrate with a home crowd.
The Race Unfolds
The fortress city of Hulst, nestled on the Dutch-Belgium border, provided a breathtaking backdrop for the 3.3-kilometer course. With 150 meters of elevation gain and steep climbs and descents, the race tested the riders' technical prowess.
The absence of a defending champion added to the intrigue, as Fem Van Empel, the 23-year-old Dutch rider who had won the last three rainbow jerseys, was not present. Instead, the front row of the starting grid was dominated by the orange jerseys of the Netherlands, a sign of their dominance in the elite women's ranks.
Puck Pieterse, fresh from back-to-back wins the previous weekend, got off to a quick start, closely followed by Alvarado and Brand. Blanka Kata Vas of Hungary, aware of the Dutch threat, positioned herself among the podium contenders early on.
Pieterse's relentless pace created a lead group of six riders, including three Dutchwomen. Among them was Jolanda Neff, a mountain bike specialist aiming for her first cyclo-cross World Championship medal. Alvarado, fresh from a runner-up finish the previous weekend, maintained a high pace in the second lap, keeping the pressure on.
As the race progressed, Brand, despite appearing on the back foot, remained a constant threat. Her experience and technical skills came to the fore as she responded to Pieterse's early dominance. A heavy crash by the technically gifted Pieterse on the slick surface at the bottom of a big descent changed the dynamics, as she lost valuable time and dropped back to a second group.
Alvarado kept the pressure on Brand, with a gap of just six seconds separating them at the mid-race distance. Further down the field, pre-race podium favorite Sara Casasola of Italy was forced to withdraw due to severe pain.
The race intensified as Brand and Alvarado traded positions, with Brand eventually pulling away after a mistake by Alvarado on the run-up climb. Heading into the penultimate lap, Brand had a 10-second lead, and she extended it to 27 seconds by the final lap, leaving Alvarado unable to respond.
In a thrilling battle for bronze, Pieterse fought off Vas and Amandine Fouquenet to claim the final podium spot.
