Brad Mortensen Inaugurated as Utah State University's 18th President | A New Era Begins (2026)

A New Era for Utah State University: A Rexburg Native Takes the Helm

A Visionary Leader Steps Forward

In a historic moment, Brad Mortensen, a proud Rexburg native and Madison High School graduate, has been inaugurated as the 18th president of Utah State University (USU). This appointment marks a significant milestone, as Mortensen becomes the first alumnus to ascend to the presidency since 1968. With a passionate and inspiring vision, Mortensen aims to propel USU into a future of innovation and impact.

"The landscape of USU is a canvas for growth and service. We must embrace change and innovation to avoid becoming a mere echo of our past. Together, we stand as one community, from Logan to Blanding, uniting students, faculty, and staff in our mission," Mortensen proclaimed.

A Proven Track Record of Leadership

And here's where it gets even more impressive: Mortensen brings over two decades of experience in higher education leadership. His tenure as president of Weber State University has been nothing short of remarkable. Under his guidance, Weber State achieved multiple accolades for providing an outstanding return on investment for its graduates. Mortensen also established the Miller Advanced Research and Solutions Center, a collaborative effort with the Utah Legislature, the U.S. Air Force, and the aerospace and defense industry. Additionally, he oversaw the introduction of new graduate programs, including the prestigious Doctor of Nursing Practice, and led the university's dual enrollment program to become the largest in the nation among four-year institutions in 2024.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox praised Mortensen, calling him "one of the best human beings in our state." Cox emphasized the critical need for strong leadership at USU, stating, "This institution has faced challenges, and we require a leader who can preserve the best of what it means to be an Aggie while driving us forward. Brad Mortensen is that leader."

A Unifying Force for USU

Geoffrey Landward, commissioner of the Utah System of Higher Education, highlighted Mortensen's ability to unite diverse stakeholders during his time at Weber State. "Mortensen has proven his skill in bringing faculty, staff, students, industry partners, and community leaders together. This is precisely the kind of leadership USU needs to thrive, and we are confident in his ability to lead with excellence," Landward said.

Mortensen has outlined four key goals to guide his mission at USU:

  1. Expand USU's statewide reach, ensuring educational opportunities, economic mobility, and vibrant extension programs for all.
  2. Enhance student success with unwavering support for completion and a focus on meaningful return on investment.
  3. Lead groundbreaking research and discovery, applying USU's community engagement to address critical issues in land, water, energy, defense, agriculture, and AI, while promoting human well-being.
  4. Instill values of authenticity, integrity, and civic engagement, and champion the pursuit of peace.

"As Utah's land grant institution, our commitment to continuous self-improvement is paramount. We must approach our work with humility, recognizing that there is always more to learn," Mortensen emphasized.

In his inaugural address, Mortensen concluded, "May USU not only impart knowledge but also embody a learning culture. Let us educate with empathy, serve our state with purpose, and lead with unity in a world that often finds itself divided."

As Mortensen embarks on his journey as USU's president, the future looks bright for the university and its community. What do you think? Is Mortensen the right leader to guide USU into a new era? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
