The Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust in London has issued an alert after discovering these videos on platforms like Facebook and TikTok. The videos show 'doctors' applying weight loss patches and claiming remarkable results, but here's the catch: these doctors don't exist!
Dr. Daghni Rajasingam, the deputy chief medical officer at the Trust, emphasized that "NHS clinicians would never endorse commercial products like this." It's a clear attempt to deceive and exploit people's trust in medical professionals.
But here's where it gets controversial: these videos are part of a larger scam. Graham Barrows, a financial crime expert, revealed that the product being advertised is available on reputable online marketplaces. While the product itself might be legitimate, the entire marketing strategy is a scam. Barrows explained, "The real scam is persuading people to buy something that may or may not work, all while presenting false identities and success stories."
And this is the part most people miss: the scammers are using sophisticated tactics. Barrows uncovered that the profile photo of one of the 'doctors' was actually taken from a Romanian bank advert! The package shown in the video also had the French flag, despite claims of being 'made in the UK.'
Barrows advises people to be vigilant and do their research. "Scammers are always looking for ways to make money, and weight loss products are a prime target. Always verify the source and do basic checks before making any purchases."
The Trust urges anyone who comes across these videos to report them to the respective social media platforms. So, the next time you see a weight loss ad with a 'doctor's endorsement,' remember: it might just be AI-generated baloney!
