Europe's Energy Revolution: Azerbaijan Steps Up
In a bold move, Azerbaijan has commenced natural gas deliveries to Germany and Austria, marking a significant development in Europe's quest to reduce its reliance on Russian gas. This news comes as Europe aims to completely phase out Russian gas by 2027.
Azerbaijan's state-owned energy company, SOCAR, has initiated substantial gas sales through the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), a vital component of the Southern Gas Corridor. Starting in January 2026, Azerbaijan's gas has been made available to buyers in both Austria and Germany, as announced by SOCAR.
The gas supply to these countries is facilitated by connections to TAP in Italy, further extending the reach of Azerbaijani gas across Europe. With this expansion, Azerbaijan now supplies gas to a total of 16 countries.
But here's where it gets controversial... The Southern Gas Corridor has long been seen as a potential alternative to Russian gas supply, especially after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. TAP has become a critical player in Europe's energy security, delivering substantial volumes of natural gas from Azerbaijan to EU member states. Azeri Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov highlighted TAP's importance during a meeting with Italian officials.
TAP, a 545-mile-long pipeline, is part of the Southern Gas Corridor, a project that cost over $30 billion and took seven years to complete. It starts near the Evros area of Kipoi at the Greek-Turkish border, connecting to the Trans Anatolian Pipeline (TANAP) that traverses Turkey.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine led to a significant reduction in gas supply to EU customers, and supply to Germany was halted after the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines in September 2022. In response, Germany, Europe's largest economy and once the top buyer of Russian gas, has turned to LNG supply and built regasification terminals to receive cargoes.
And this is the part most people miss... The EU recently agreed to permanently stop importing Russian gas. The bloc plans to phase out LNG imports by the end of 2026 and pipeline gas by September 2027. This move is a significant step towards energy independence for Europe.
