Around 11:20 a.m., five people entered a business on The Avenue in Albany, Auckland, and began taking items. What started as a seemingly typical day took a dark turn when an altercation erupted, resulting in the store owner being assaulted. Thankfully, his injuries were minor, but the emotional toll of such an event cannot be understated. The offenders fled the scene in a vehicle, but their escape was short-lived. By 12 p.m., police had located and arrested them near the intersection of Queen Street and Coatesville-Riverhead Highway—a swift response that highlights the efficiency of local law enforcement.
Among the arrested, a 21-year-old man from Manukau faces charges of aggravated assault and shoplifting, while the other four, aged 17, 18, 18, and 21, were charged with shoplifting. The youngest offender will be referred to Youth Aid, while the remaining four are set to appear in the North Shore District Court on Monday. But here’s where it gets controversial: police also linked three of the offenders to another shoplifting incident in Riverhead from late October, raising questions about repeat offenses and the effectiveness of current deterrents. Two were charged, while the third was referred to Youth Aid.
Waitematā East Area Response Manager Senior Sergeant Caroline Miles expressed relief that the offenders were apprehended in less than an hour. She emphasized, “We have offered support to the victim, who was confronted by a scenario that no person should ever have to deal with. We’re just grateful that he is able to recover at home and be with his family.”
