Here’s a bold statement: Transparency in charity finances isn’t just a legal requirement—it’s a moral obligation to those we serve. And this is the part most people miss: without rigorous external audits, even the most well-intentioned organizations can lose the trust of their donors and communities. That’s why Initiative Africa (IA), an Ethiopian-based charity dedicated to uplifting vulnerable communities and empowering local organizations, is taking a proactive step. We’re calling on qualified and licensed audit firms to submit proposals for the external audit of our FY 2025 financial statements. But here’s where it gets controversial: in a sector where accountability is often questioned, we’re not just meeting the minimum standards—we’re setting a benchmark for others to follow.
The selected firm will conduct the audit in line with the Authority for Civil Society Organizations (ACSO) standards, with the potential to extend their services for the subsequent two fiscal years. This isn’t just a one-time gig; it’s an opportunity to partner with an organization committed to long-term integrity and impact. Here’s the catch: we’re not just looking for any audit firm. We want a partner who understands the unique challenges and nuances of NGO finances—someone who’s been in the trenches and knows what it takes to ensure every penny is accounted for.
Requirements:
- A valid professional license (issued in 2017/2018 EC) to ensure compliance with Ethiopian regulations.
- TIN and VAT certificates, because we believe in playing by the rules.
- Proven experience with NGO audits, because charity finances aren’t your typical corporate ledger—they require a specialized touch.
Scope of Work:
The audit will delve into approximately 10 files of accounting documents, encompassing a comprehensive financial review, on-the-ground field verification where necessary, and the submission of a management letter and consolidated financial report. Think of it as a financial health check-up, but with the added responsibility of safeguarding public trust.
Submission Details:
Interested firms should submit sealed technical and financial proposals in person between November 5–10, 2025, during working hours, to Initiative Africa’s Senior Administrative & Finance Manager at Lucky Building, 5th Floor, Addis Ababa. The deadline is November 10, 2025, at 5:00 PM sharp. No late submissions—we’re serious about deadlines, just as we are about transparency.

Now, here’s the thought-provoking question: In a world where charity scandals make headlines, how can organizations like Initiative Africa restore and maintain public trust? Is it enough to follow the rules, or should we be pushing for even higher standards? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments—let’s start a conversation that could shape the future of nonprofit accountability.
