Basic Bible Studies

In ASL on DVD

Deaf people love to study the Bible. Each of the Bible studies are led by a well known teacher who is skilled in both Bible knowledge and the language of signs. The study is presented in four 30 minute sessions and is excellent for small group studies in both the church and home.

1 Peter by Neil Peyton
The Book of I Peter was written to the whole body of Christians scattered throughout the area of Asia Minor. This is a letter of encouragement, instruction and admonition. Peter was doing what Christ had commanded him to do. He was encouraging and strengthening the brothers by feeding the flock of God. He tells them to love one another deeply, from the heart for they have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. Neil Peyton is the teacher for this special study of I Peter. He served as a missionary to the deaf in North Carolina.

1 Corinthians by Jerry St. John
The first letter of Paul to the Corinthians is to the church that Paul had founded on his second missionary journey. It had become infected with the evils that surrounded it in a licentious city. There were divisions in the church. It was the desire of Paul to purify the church from party spirit and immorality, which was the main cause of the writing of the letter. Paul calls them to love one another. He wrote them and said, "now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love." Jerry St. John who served for many years as a missionary to the deaf is the teacher for this special study.

II Corinthians by Carter Bearden Jr.
The second letter of Paul to the Corinthians is to the church that Paul had founded on his second missionary journey. There were those in the church at Corinth that called into question the apostleship of Paul. Paul states that he is an apostle. This is one of the most personal of Paul's letters. He dwells upon his own ministry while he discloses his motives, his spiritual passion and his tender love for the church there at Corinth. Carter Bearden, Jr. has been pastor of the deaf church at First Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia and is the teacher for this study of the book of II Corinthians.

Psalms by Ray Bearden
The Book of Psalms is one of the most beautiful books of the Bible. It includes 150 spiritual songs and poems used by the church in worship and devotion throughout the ages. During the time of the second temple, it was used as their hymn book. It is a book of prayer and praise, covering a wide variety of spiritual experiences. The book is often called the psalms of David due to the fact that David was the author of a large number of the psalms. Ray Bearden is the teacher for this four session Bible study. Ray has been pastor to the deaf in two churches.

James by Neil Peyton
The Book of James is one of the most important books of the New Testament for it gives practical everyday direction to Christian living. James said, "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says." Also he wrote, "Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded." Neil Peyton, who served for many years as a missionary to the deaf in North Carolina makes this book come to life through his simple direct teaching of God's Word.

Malachi by Rodney Webb
The book of Malachi is a graphic picture of the closing period of Old Testament history, showing that great reforms were needed to prepare the way for the coming Messiah. He said to the people "'See, I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,' says the Lord Almighty." He called the people to give when he said "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house." Rodney Webb who serves at the North American Mission Board of the SBC is the teacher.

John by Ray Bearden
The Book of John is the gospel of Jesus Christ written by the beloved disciple John. It is the gospel that so clearly points us to Jesus as savior and Lord. John wrote, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him." Ray Bearden is the teacher for this four session Bible study. Ray has been pastor to the deaf in two churches.

Acts by Carter Bearden Sr.
The book of Acts is the working of the Holy Spirit in the lives of the people in the first century church. The author was Luke, the beloved physician, who was writing to his friend, Theophilus. Luke was a traveling companion and personal friend of Paul. The history of the development of the early church from the ascension of Christ to Paul's imprisonment at Rome is given and has inspired the church to world missions. Carter Bearden, Sr. is the teacher for this four session Bible study. He has led in the establishment of deaf ministry all across America. His ministry now reaches into countries around the world to reach the deaf for Christ.

Isaiah by Ray Bearden
The Book of Isaiah is a book that tells what is happening and what is going to happen in the future. Isaiah is generally regarded as the greatest of the Old Testament prophets. He was the prophet of redemption telling about the coming Christ and how he would suffer for the sins of the people. He said, "But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed." Ray Bearden is the teacher for this four session Bible study. Ray has been pastor to the deaf in two churches.

Sermon on the Mount by Carter Bearden Jr.
The Sermon on the Mount is the greatest sermon ever preached by the greatest preacher that ever lived. This is a message that Jesus shared with his disciples that presented a new law that would work only for those who were saved and had the Son of God living in their hearts and lives. It gives everyday advice as how to live which is in contrast with what the world believes and does. This is a study that you will want to share with friends and neighbors. Carter Bearden, Jr. is the teacher for this four session Bible study. He has been the pastor of the deaf at the First Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia.

Hosea by Ray Bearden
The Book of Hosea is a book about the Love of God for his people Israel. Hosea could not understand how God could love Israel when Israel had turned away from God and worshiped other gods. But through the personal experience that Hosea had in his own life he came to understand the great love of God for lost men and women. Gomer was his unfaithful wife. But even though she was unfaithful to Hosea, he still loved her and bought her back from being a slave. Ray Bearden is the teacher for this four session Bible study. Ray has been pastor to the deaf in two churches.

Galatians by Ray Bearden
The Book of Galatians is a letter written by the apostle Paul to the churches in Galatia, a district in Asia Minor. It is a defense of the doctrine of justification by faith, warning the people not to turn back to Judaism with its slavery to the law. It has been called "The Magna Charta of the Church." Paul shows that there is liberty in Christ and in Christ alone. The ceremonial law cannot save a person. After Christ has made us free, there is no reason to go back to the law which cannot save. Ray Bearden is the teacher for this four session Bible study.
